LECTURES
Week 1 (Wed, 31 Aug 2022): National Day Public Holiday
(Public Holiday)
Week 2 (Wed, 7 Sep 2022): Introduction of Module Information and Basic Adobe Illustrator Interface and Features
The lecture is mainly conducted by Mr Hafiz which is the tutor for my session. The module leader is Ms Noranis. Mr Hafiz demonstrate some basic things to know using Adobe Illustrator (AI) to draw anything. These basic operation are good enough to produce any shapes we want.
- layers
- basic shapes
- pen tool and curvature tool
He also introduce us some useful links that helps us in using Adobe AI, mainly about how to draw anything using Adobe AI:
Mr Hafiz also teach us to use the Bezier Game to practice the usage of pen tool.
L_2.0, Bezier Game, week 2 |
Afterwards, we are required to draw the 8 basic shapes according to below:
L_2.1, 8 Basic shapes, week 2 |
We are encouraged to take good care in grouping and naming the layers properly which easier for us to edit anything in the future.
After class, our homework is to design a character using these 8 basic shapes, we should not cut or stretch the shapes.
Week 3 (Wed, 14 Sep 2022): Pathfinder and Character Design Basics
Today's tutorial is mainly about the "pathfinder" feature in Adobe AI.
L_3.0, Pathfinder, week 3 |
Mr Hafiz also demonstrate us how to apply the pathfinder in our vormator character.
L_3.1, Example of pathfinder application, week 3 |
At the same time, he also demonstrated the effect of the "mask" feature, which can be describe as adding a filter with a certain shape toward the object behind. He also teach us how to use the "duplicate" feature to draw a repeating pattern.
After the class, Ms Anis explain to us about the assignment requirement of the Honor Talents competition which is also our task 2. We are required to design 3 art board with the theme of:
- cultural prosperity or celebration
- renewal of life or reborn.
L_3.2, Example of the work outcome should be, week 3 |

FEEDBACK
Week 3: Feedback on vormator character design
General Feedback: Looks cute.
Specific Feedback: Can add some shadow or some small detail to embellish the character.
REFLECTIONS
Experience:
First time attending proper Adobe AI practical class, Mr Hafiz and Ms Anis is very friendly and passion in teaching us how to use Adobe AI as most of us are new into this.
Observations:
Adobe AI allows us to draw anything we want with just some simple and basic tools such as pen tool, pathfinder and knife.
Findings:
Once get the "logic" of Adobe software, it is very easy to familiar with other Adobe softwares' interface as the "logic" is very similar.

This is the first Adobe related book I purchased from Kinokuniya. The price is not cheap but I think it worth it because it explained how to operate and produce design using Adobe AI effectively with different ways. The official tutorial is always the best!
